Too bad BMC did not go this route and produce an MG Farina coupe based on the Farina Magnette: 1.8L MGB motor with 4 speed / overdrive. Read more

Hi,

I have a Jaguar XJ 12 HE 1982 Series 3 manufactured in Europe and I have an issue with the gearbox. I am looking for this item AAU6679 - VALVE BODY SPACER PLATE, but apparently it’s not manufactured anymore. Unfortunately, there is no option on the second hand market. The only options that I could find was on the US market and there is a brand called Transgo and the product is http://www.transgo.com/products.php?category_id=94&product_id=158 .... Read more

Hi All

How long can I keep a Purflux oil filter before it starts to deteriorate?... Read more

edlithgow

Don't know, but I'd think you could essentially stop it deteriorating by pre-oiling it.

Its likely deterioration will be by oxidation and possibly acid hydrolysis of the paper, assuming its kept dry.

Filling the filters with oil will largely exclude oxygen, and the buffering of the oil should neutralise any acid.

If you keep them in a sealed container the oil shouldn't oxidise much either.

I thoroughly enjoy these articles every week. This particular one caught my eye as I had a 406 estate in the late 90s and agree with the authors sentiments. Today I have a new top of the range 5 series touring - fast, comfortable, practical and expensive, but not as comfortable or forgiving as my old 406. Keep the articles coming, and my other fav 'A Grand Monday' Read more

Brilliant car. I had a 1997 406 2.0 GLX which was completely a great drive and completely reliable, in marked contrast to its 405 predecessor.

Unfortunately, I killed it by driving 120 miles in a heatwave, then parking on dry grass. Exhaust set grass alight, then grass set engine bay alight: end of 406.

After 2 Citroen C5s, I now have a 308 SW 1.2 130 Petrol Turbo; another great car and to date completely reliable

While considering Corsas check out the original Tigra (modern classic which went from original design concept to production with very few changes) or even the later version which is now a very cheap tin top coupe. Read more

how do I fit a clutch cable to the car, have bought the item and been let down by someone who says he can fit the part hence the car still sitting in the garage. I am fairly practicle with cars so will have a go if I now what to do.The old cable snapped and therefore needs new one fitted to make the car useable again Read more

This is an easy job that can be done by the roadside if necessary - the Haynes Manual tells you how to do it. My advice to every Mk1 & 2 Escort owner is "always carry a spare cable in the boot". If your cable breaks then it can be changed in a few minutes but if you aren't carrying a spare then the breakdown people will not be able to help get you back on the road and will just tow you in. Two years ago my clutch cable suddenly snapped as I was pulling away from a set of traffic lights, luckily I was able to coast into a lay-by and called my breakdown service. By the time the mechanic arrived I had already removed the old cable and threaded the new one through the bulkhead and with a little assistance (it's easier with two people) the job was done in about 10 minutes. Had I not been carrying a spare cable it would definitely have been a tow-in job.

Can anyone help me with an MOT query?

This year I acquired a Standard 10 Pick Up in need of complete restoration. Having managed to get its number plate reassigned to it I am now keen to track its MOT history. Its last tax ran out on 1/1/80 so its been off the road a long time... Read more

I've had two Xsara Picasso and I nearly bought another. (Meriva B got my money instead). I like weird cars, and I love the Picasso. I had a diesel 51 plate first, then an 09 petrol. They're actually great cars, and so cheap you'd be stupid not to have one on the drive! I might take a bit of polish to the 09 at the weekend to see if it lasts a bit longer! Read more

I agree. I bought a new one in 09 on the scrappage deal. £8,800 + my old 306. Now 80,000 miles, and very few issues. Very comfortable and great load space with the rear seats out. (No sill either.) A great all-rounder and no surprise it sold so many - it deserved to. They are so useful, I think they'll be around for a long time. Bit p***ed-off though when Jeremy Clarkson said that Picasso drivers had lost the will to live! (I saw an 03 Picasso in white at the weekend, it looked really good.)

Wonderful looking cars. I remember my friend driving 3 of us up to Carlisle for a wedding in a Rover 800 series sportback.

It was 1991 - pre speed cameras - and he was absolutely canning it because we wanted to arrive before pub closing time (how silly but we were all young).

I was acting as lookout on the M6 for motorway patrol cars but back in the distance I saw a car very slowly gaining on us - no flashing lights.

Eventually it caught us and overtook. It was a white Ford Sierra Cosworth - however my friend said that his foot wasn't to the floor - but perhaps the Cosworths driver's wasn't either - but I'm sure it's ultimate top end was higher. Read more

Hello all,

I am currently doing some research into how the old (Roughly 1970's) rear plastic light clusters were produced. I presume it was through some sort of injection moulding? ... Read more
