I had one of these back in '98. At the time I was really attracted to the elegant styling. Thought it was a good looking car compared to what else was around. But I didn't get on with it that well and was ultimately disappointed by the car, so got rid after 12 months. Rock heavy depreciation. And it just seemed to get endless door dents, despite my careful parking, as if the metal was paper thin... It was like, you happened to be stood next to it and sneeze, and then ding, another dent appeared...!

All sorts of theories about the ID of this RHD estate car, circa mid 50s, an American friend reckons it's a (US) 55 Ford station wagon, but I think it's British built. There is a name badge on the front wing. I haven't seen anything remotely similar anywhere. Anyone got any ideas? Read more

I also have an early 2000 1.6 3 door IS a low miler, it’s quick agile and fun to drive comparable to a few hot hatches from the previous decade. The early ones look better (pre facelift) and are better build quality and still under BMW also had a Peugeot gearbox which I think was better than the later Ford ones fitted. Most parts are readily available and not expensive and there’s plenty in the breakers yards as end of life hits many Rovers so a good time to get spares and upgrades. They are also easy to upgrade performance and handling if that’s your bag. Earlier cars with the Lucas fobs/immobiliser far better and reliable than the later Pectron system. They are an affordable modern classic with relatively basic mechanics and bags of fun.

Passed my test in 1987 in a diesel 205.Not sure about the 'well made' bit, the dash rattled when it was brand new but those old simple diesels go on forever. And the french rust protection seems unsurpassed,I had a 1998 306 up to a few years ago with not a hint of corrosion, shame the thing felt tinny and the electrics died.It was still in better nick than my 2004 Mercedes E320.
