Mercedes-Benz SL (1989 - 2001)
SL320
Fantastic car - but do invest in getting a good one
I have now had my SL320 for a year, it was the car you dreamed of owning as a teenager in 1993- and it is by far and away my favourite car to have owned, albeit not my daily driver, it never fails to make me smile when I take it out for a spin. These cars are built like a tank, just close the door and you can feel the build quality. It has 95,000 on it and basically looks like it has come out of the showroom.
As stated before, these are definitely cruisers, they are not built for sports handling or an "exciting" drive, but I cannot think of a better cruiser on a summers day.
Servicing wise for general consumables it is reasonable as the cross over with other Mercedes is quiet common, I had a full service for no more than I would pay on a modern car.
Obviously with an old car things will go wrong! I have had to have some work done on the transmission which was not cheap and I well expect that something else will go wrong at some point - however, when you take into account the original cost of the car and the reasonable servicing I think it can be justified.
Top tips before you buy;
- Get the roof looked at - including the hardtop, the hydraulic system is sound, if it has enough fluid
- Service history, I think this is SUPER important, I have it back to 1995 and would not have bought without, there is too much to go wrong on these without knowing history
- Check the tyres, these are heavy cars- if someone has skimped on cheap tyres what else has been skimped on
- try to get one witht he wind deflector, makes a big difference!
