Three Peugeot 205GTIs head to auction

Published 22 November 2016

Three classic 1980s GTIs are heading to auction next month. The three Peugeot 205 hot hatches will go under the hammer on Saturday, 3 December, at the Classic Car Auctions’ sale at the Warwickshire Exhibition Centre.

Expectations are high for GTIs. In July, a 1989 model with just 7000 miles on the clock made £30,938 – considerably more than its £12k estimate and a new record.

The first of the three is a 1989 Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI that has been mechanically and cosmetically overhauled to return it to its original condition. It is estimated at £5000 to £7000. Following an engine-out inspection, the car has had a new water pump, cambelt kit, head gasket, brake lines, radiator and wheel bearings, with suspension components removed, cleaned and painted where necessary.

It has also benefited from a glass-out respray in the original black gloss while the inside has been retrimmed where required, but still maintains the 1980s cloth interior. The original 1.6-litre alloy wheels have also been retrimmed.

The second model on offer is a 1988 Peugeot 205 1.9 GTI, also benefiting from a recent overhaul to replace mechanical components as necessary as well as an interior refresh. The first owner ordered the car new from Mill Hill Peugeot in London and kept it for five years before passing it onto its second and current owner, who kept it until 2015.

The car comes with the original owner's pack, including owner's guide, handbook, maintenance booklet, radio guide and dealer location booklet, as well as a fresh MoT certificate, and is offered without reserve.

The third car is a 1988 Peugeot 205 1.6 GTI which has been in storage for the past 20 years. The interior looks to be in good condition and the car has been recommissioned to be returned to the road. With 56k on the odometer, it is estimated to fetch £5000- £7000.

Guy Lees-Milne, auctions manager at CCA, said, ‘The 205 GTI is the holy grail of hot hatches, possibly the ultimate modern classic, and we have not one but three up for grabs.’

’Over the past year we’ve seen prices soar, and iconic hot-hatches are firmly cementing their place in the classic car market,’ Lees-Milne added.
