Renault 16: 50 years
Nobody should underestimate the importance of the Renault 16 when it comes to reshaping family-style motoring, for this front-wheel drive five-door hatchback was a world away from the traditional three-box designs it found itself up against. It looked unlike anything else when it arrived in 1965, and went on to enjoy a 14-year career.
The 16 was phenomenally spacious, comfortable and practical, and paved the way for other manufacturers to launch their own family-size hatches. The Maxi, Passat, Alpine and innumerable others that followed all owed their existence to the innovation shown by Renault in the mid-1960s.
