A friend fo life

I purchased the car in April 2002 from a specialist dealer. It had been meticulously maintained, and was totally original (didn't even have a radio or speakers). It has been the most cost effective car I have owned. It is pre cat and DPF, and no air con. It does have power steering, electric windows and sunroof. I have kept up the service schedule using an independent garage. It has no computerized electronics and is simple to look after. It has never let me down, being diesel, it does 40 mpg and being an auto it is so easy to drive. I now have my first major expense, replacing the original exhaust after 22 years. It's only about 100bhp so is no sports car but I have driven it on the autobahn at a constant 100mph and it was quiet and steady. The trip to Northern Germany returned 44mpg (not all at 100 mph though!). 22 years on, Mercedes have made many developments but the complexity of their modern cars has not improved real mpg or reliability or build quality. Emissions have been greatly improved but as I only do about 5k miles a year it chucks out the same amount as a new car doing 20k. This is a car for life.
