Land Rover Range Rover (1970 - 1996)
4 door turbo diesel
Follow up
This is just really a follow up to my first review. There actually is no problem with any of the heads. I think the noise is either a slight blow on an exhaust gasket on the head when it's hot; more likely this than a noisy tappet. It does not use any water. It doesn't smoke when started from cold and neither does it produce any mayonnaise in the rocker covers or oily deposits in the cooling system, so no problems there. A friend of mine who is brutally honest (more often than not, especially when you don't want to hear it!) actually said that the VM engine was a good lump and only gave problems if you cooked it. The engine sits higher that the rad in the RR so it's imperative that you make sure the cooling system is full, the radiator is in good condition and the viscous fan is working properly. A good mod is to get hold of a RR or Disco air con condenser fan which will fit on the front and blow air in the right direction.
The other surprise is that the RR will actually achieve thirty mpg without crazy driving methods and does about 26-28 mpg just knocking about the countryside. All in all, this was a good buy and it generates interest most places it goes.
