Fiat X1/9 1300 and 1500 (1972 - 1989)
X1/9 1500
Totally underrated mid-engined mini-supercar with sublime handling and fabulous spares backup
There are few surprises left in the classic car world especially at the less expensive end of the market, but now on my third X1/9 I can honestly say this is one model which genuinely surpasses expectation. No, it isn't blisteringly quick in standard form by modern standards, it needs constant fettling especially keeping the fairly complex bodywork together, but there are few cars out there to successfully combine such a clever package of mid-engine balance along with adequate storage up front and in the back, an easily removed and stored targa top, a full size spare tucked discretely behind the drivers seat, flip-up headlights, five speed gearbox and those mini-lamborghini looks.
Rust is no more an issue than any other car of the period, the mechanicals are reliable and easy to source and the ride and comfort rarely found in a modern sports car.
On top of all this, you can still pick up a top example for the same price as a rust-ridden Triumph or MG – but I'd hurry – this probably won't be the case for much longer!
