Nothing can prepare you for your first experience of a Series 2 CX and you know the moment you see one that there is no car like it. It's particularly low slung for a large executive car and its smooth and aerodynamic form promises to whisper through the air like an owl on a warm evening breeze. As you enter the cabin you're presented with a sculpted interior which immediately immerses you in not just a huge amount of space, but space age as well. The single-spoke steering wheel, pod-like instrument cluster, and concave rear screen all suggest a drive unlike anything you've had before. It's only when you pull away that the spell is truly cast and the magic carpet suspension floats you along like a boat on a smooth, bottle glass ocean.
Clever things like a self-cleaning rear window which has an automatic de-misting setting, self levelling suspension with electric ride height adjustment and two-stage indicator switch were several years ahead of their time.
The 3-spear automatic would reach 50mph in first gear, 80mph in second and if the law allowed, 120mph in third - which is top speed, with the revs at red line. How many cars can you say that about!?
If you dig a little deeper on the CX you'll read all sorts of things about "unfathomable electrics" "complicated hydraulics", let alone "high running costs" , but it's because there is nothing like it, because the steering wheel self-centres all on its own with a hiss even when stationary, because the rear end sits down gently every time you pull away and because it's mind-bogglingly wider at the front end than it is at the back that you forget about these things.
Certainly, it's a huge and heavy car that has two-thirds of its total weight on the front wheels, but at no time does it feel heavy. Solid, surefooted and stable, certainly, but not clumsy. It drives as lightly as if each tyre is filled with helium and every road ahead has just been resurfaced for you.
The CX has always been a car of grace, presence, technology and comfort. Unmistakably unique. Uniquely French.
