7 May 1963
FROM OUR MOTORING CORRESPONDENT
Production of the Morris 1100 saloon at the British Motor Corporation's Longbridge plant has reached 3,750 a week, and is expected to be 4,500 a week by mid- summer, but some customers have been waiting for nine months and demand at home and abroad is still mounting, a spokesman of the corporation said yesterday.
About 40 per cent of the cars are being exported, assembly has begun at the Innocenti works in Italy, and nearly 70,000 models have been produced since their introd, uction last August.
Output of the B.M.C. Mini cars is running at 5,500 a week, out of a total car production figure by the corporation of 15,000. This is the full capacity rate for the firm at present, but by the end of 1963. when their £49m. expansion programme is complete, total vehicle output will have reached 20,000 a week, or one million a year.
