New BMC Plant In Portugal

The British Motor Corporation announce that their Austin and Morris cars and commercial vehicles are to be built in Portugal.
Assembly will be undertaken by Industria de Montagem de Automoveis Lda. (I.M.A.), in a new factory now under construction near Setubal, a port 25 miles south of Lisbon. The newly formed company is a joint enterprise of B.M.C.'s two distributors- J. J. Goncalves, Sucrs., and A. M. Almeida. Lda., in cooperation with B.M.C.
The association thus established provides for full-scale technical assistance which will enable the use of certain Portuguese-made components to assist in the development of national industry This new plant will provide capacity for around 600 vehicles a month. Production of commercial vehicles-is expected to start mid-year and of passenger cars by the year- end and initially employment will be giver to about 200 persons.
B.M.C. sales to Portugal have more than doubled in the last three years to represent over 15 per cent of the total market.
