Morris Increases Car Output

12 February 1963

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
OXFORD, FEB. 11

A new night shift, which will result in an immediate increase of 800 cars a week to about 6,600 starts at Morris Motors, Cowley, Oxford, tonight.

To get the extra labour Morris Motors have been recruiting workers from the neighbouring Pressed Steel Company's car bodies factory, whose workers have been on short time since the end of last summer.

The arrangement has been encouraged by the biggest trade union at Pressed Steel, the Transport and General Workers, as a way of reducing hardship at the factory. In recent weeks about 450 workers have transferred and more are moving. The number of Pressed Steel Company workers on short time has dropped from about 7000 to just over 2000.
