Government waste
I think the government car scrappage scheme has got serious failings. I am sure there will be many cases where someone who only does 5,000 miles a year (for example) will trade in their 10 year-old car with 50,000 miles for a brand new one. Their old car would be in very good condition and would have made an excellent second-hand buy for people on a limited budget, but under the terms of the scheme it will have to be scrapped and destroyed. It seems criminal that low-mileage cars in such good condition will have to be destroyed, especially when much older and more polluting vehicles will remain on the road, run by people who cannot afford to buy a brand new one. What do you think?

That is exactly what is happening. 10-year-old Mondeos (the most reliable 10 year old car) with 50k miles and in perfect condition are simply being crushed, along with thousands of small Rovers with head gasket problems, BMWs, Audis, Mercedes, Mazda MX-5s, MGFs, SAABs. Hyundai even scrapped a 1966 Austin 1100, a Morris Minor, an MG Midget, an MGB and a FIAT X1/9 (all too far gone for financially viable restoration). But that’s part of the price of jump-starting the economy.
