Facelifted in March 1999.

Useful estates with 7 seat 'Family' option.

Powerful and economical 110bhp 2.1TD. New class-leading 110bhp 2.0 litre HDI diesel engine from October 1998.

Petrol engines from 112bhp 1.8 to 194bhp V6.

Three lap and diagonal rear belts.

3-year warranty from January 2000.

New 2.2 litre 160 bhp SRi from July 2000. New 2.2 litre 136bhp HDI with particulate filter from March 2001 at prices from £19,390.

2.0-litre 143bhp HPi petrol engine from September 2001 offers top speed of 130 mph and 0-60 mph in 10.3 seconds with combined consumption of 37.6mpg and low 177g/km CO2 putting it in the then £140pa VED bracket and also a low BIK tax base.

Also a 2.0-litre, 110 bhp HDI automatic GLX, GTX and Executive models. Top speed is 117 mph, combined fuel consumption 43.5mpg and CO2 output 173g/km.

Low 3 out of 9 point death rate from accidents in 406s generally.
