Leyland firm hit by dynamite demo

7 November 1975

DAILY EXPRESS
By Robin Stafford Rome Thursday

A stick of dynamite was hurled into the Rome showroom of the Leyland-Innocenti car firm today - just before talks with the Italian Government to try to save the money-losing subsidiary of British Leyland. It was the latest and most violent protest by Italian car workers threatened with redundancy. The bomb shattered windows - and damaged the store front but nobody was injured..

British Leyland has said 1,500 of the Milan-based company's 4,500 workers must be sacked and production must be increased 25 per cent by the remainder. Otherwise they will allow Leyland-Innocenti, who produce Minis, to go bankrupt. Leyland-Innocenti is £10 million in debt and British Leyland is refusing to cover the loss unless its new terms are met.

Leyland-Innocenti director Mr Percy Plant said last night: "If the Italian Government does not come up with some concrete proposals, it's all over - we shut down."
