Rover stoppage

6 October 1973

Production of the new Rover 2200 saloon at Solihull was halted yesterday for the second time this week. The new model, an uprated version of the Rover 2000, was hit on Tuesday by a strike at the British Leyland car body plant at Cowley, which caused a shortage of body pressings for Rover. After the Cowley men resumed work, production of the Rover 2200 and the 3500 was back to normal on Thursday. But production of both models was stopped yesterday and 600 workers were laid off indefinitely because the 250 men involved at Cowley had walked out again.

Equal pay protest: The first strike in Oxford over equal pay for women is due to begin next Tuesday, when 200 women who work in the offices of the Austin Morris car body plant at Cowley say they will refuse to work next week.
