STRIKES HALT NEW JAGUAR AFTER WEEK

Production of the export winning new Jaguar car series has been halted within a week of launch, by strikes at two supplier firms. The setback comes with news that sales of foreign cars in Britain rose to 31 per cent in August , their best ever. A company spokesman said last night: 'This is a very great tragedy for us and for Britain. Here we have an export winner in our new XJ series. But through no fault of our own we have to stop production. It is quite heartbreaking.'

Two thousand men will be laid off at the Coventry works today. The outlook is bleak. A meeting of 46 shop stewards representing 450 strikers at Wilmot Breeden in Birmingham, yesterday failed to resolve the pay dispute. And there is no sign of a breakthrough in the 24-day stoppage at Adwest Engineering at Reading, Berkshire, which supplies power steering units.
