Castle Bromwich strike

More than 2,000 are now laid off at British Leyland's Castle Bromwich car body plant, as a result of a three-day-old strike by 330 press operators. It has halted assembly of Minis at the group's Longbridge factory, where 1,250 day and night shift workers have been sent home.
The strike has also stopped production of bodies for Jaguar's XJ range, but stocks are sufficient to maintain production for several days. Talks between management and union officials have so far failed to settle the dispute.
