Coventry strike threatened

British Leyland car and light commercial vehicle production is threatened by a strike of 2,500 workers at the Austin-Morris engine plant, Coventry.
The men walked out yesterday when the company refused to increase piece-work prices and attempted to introduce a new system of working based on flat rate payments. This is in line with British Leyland's policy of ending piecework at all its factories. A prolonged strike could lead to widespread lay-offs at Austin- Morris factories at Cowley and Longbridge, Leyland Bathgate, Jaguar and Triumph.
A third Coventry strike is threatened at Jaguar. Two thousand assembly and trim track workers have given notice of strike action which expires tomorrow.
