More Workers Laid Off At Bathgate
18 August 1970
EVENING TIMES
More men were put on short time today at the British Leyland factory, Bathgate, and a further 100 tractor machining employees were laid off because of a strike at the GKN Sankey plant in Shropshire, which supplies components to Bathgate.
They and 350 other men, idle since last weekend, have been told not to report back to their jobs until further notice. A British Leyland spokesman said that the position was to be reviewed later today.
The strike at the English factory has brought short time to the Bathgate men earlier than they expected. About 2300 employees were due to start a four-day working week at the end of this week because of a drop in truck and tractor sales.
