Car Delivery Men To Go Back

One strike ended and another was averted here today. At a lengthy meeting 450 car delivery drivers voted to return to work on Monday. Their decision averted a breakdown in production at Coventry's two major car firms, Rootes and Standard- Triumph. Jaguars were forced to lay off 2,350 workers at their two factories today because of the strike, which started last Monday.
The delivery men stopped work over the increased employment of casual labour by Rootes and Standard-Triumph and their distributors, which, the men claimed, was causing redundancy among full-time drivers. Today they were given assurances that the use of casual labour would stop.
About 1,200 clerical workers at Standard- Triumph, who had threatened to strike today over a wage claim, decided to resume negotiations with the management on Monday. Earlier this week the workers voted for strike action after their claim for a general increase had been rejected.
