Jaguar Lay Off 850 For A Day
3 October 1961
About 850 men producing Mark 2 Jaguar cars at Coventry will be laid off today because of a shortage of carburettors, the company announced last night.
The company's statement added: "The S.U. company are not able to meet the requirements of the Jaguar factory, which is Working at full pressure to meet its commitments, and this laying off of men has become inevitable. E-type production is not affected by this shortage and the factory will resume full operation on Wednesday morning."
Three hundred strikers at the Zenith Carburettor Company at Stanmore, Middlesex, decided yesterday to continue their stoppage. They walked out almost a fortnight ago after 25 people declared redundant had been dismissed. Strikers and union representatives agreed yesterday to attempt to have discussions at a level above that of the management.
