2500 BMC Strikers Return To Work

27 July 1961

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
BIRMINGHAM, JULY 26

The 2,500 workers at the British Motor Corporation factory of Tractor and Transmissions, who staged a 36-hour strike over the dismissal of a shop steward who clocked in another worker, returned to work here today.

At an early morning meeting, the men were told by their shop stewards' convener. Mr L. Kingscott, that the management had agreed to discuss the matter with the shop stewards and the two men concerned provided there was a return to work. The men voted by an overwhelming majority to return to work immediately. and negotiations will now take place.

The strikers claim that the shop steward, Mr F. Guest, was dismissed on the spot after he had clocked in an elderly worker to save him walking 25 yards to the clock.
