Token Strike At Austin Factory

4 November 1959

FROM OUR OWN CORRESPONDENT
BIRMINGHAM, Nov. 3

Production at the Austin factory at Longbridge was once again disrupted by an unofficial strike to-day, when 27 viewer- marshallers staged a 24-hour token stoppage in support of a pay claim. Production of the Austin Seven, the A40 and the A55 models was halted and no work was available for 2,500 other workers, who had to be sent home.

The viewer-marshallers, who are responsible for checking the supply of components for vehicles on the assembly tracks, began their strike yesterday. Originally they intended to repeat the stoppage one day each week until their pay claim was settled. but when they returned to work and discovered the proportions of the resulting dislocation, they agreed to resume unconditionally so that negotiations on their claim could proceed.
