Keeping the registration number on a classic car

I own a classic ex work rally car currently in Europe. I want to return it to the UK and store it. I need to ensure its registration number is kept as it is part of its value. What is the best way to do this?

First you need to check with the DVLA that the registration is still attached to the car. If the car was exported, then it may not be.
