Do you only have to declare SORN if your car was taxed after a certain date?

I remember reading that you only have to declare SORN if your car was taxed after a certain date. My car was not taxed at this date. Is this correct.

It is, indeed, the case that if a car wasn't taxed prior to January 31, 1998 (when SORN was introduced) that it doesn't have to be declared SORN. However, if you apply for a new V5C registration document you will need to SORN the car. You now only need to do this once, there's no need to declare SORN annually as in the past.
