Haynes manuals used to be the bible for diy.
A car that age should be easily fixable by a home mechanic.

This is an easy job that can be done by the roadside if necessary - the Haynes Manual tells you how to do it. My advice to every Mk1 & 2 Escort owner is "always carry a spare cable in the boot". If your cable breaks then it can be changed in a few minutes but if you aren't carrying a spare then the breakdown people will not be able to help get you back on the road and will just tow you in. Two years ago my clutch cable suddenly snapped as I was pulling away from a set of traffic lights, luckily I was able to coast into a lay-by and called my breakdown service. By the time the mechanic arrived I had already removed the old cable and threaded the new one through the bulkhead and with a little assistance (it's easier with two people) the job was done in about 10 minutes. Had I not been carrying a spare cable it would definitely have been a tow-in job.
