Cheap, well-equipped, very cheerful small cars, all with power assisted steering. Decent ride quality. Originally, numerous 'option packs' included comfort pack, safety pack and even aircon. Later restricted to base and SE spec. 1.4 litre four-speed auto one of the cheapest autos with PAS (1.4 manual introduced later at same price).
1.7 litre SDI with unpainted bumpers the most practical city car, capable of 65 mpg. Initially built at Wolfsburg; later Barcelona. 'SE' version replaced 'Comfort Pack'.
Three-year unlimited mileage warranty.
13-03-2001: Cute new SEAT corporate front for 2001 brought new 118 mph 100 bhp 1.4 16v petrol engine and 106 mph 75 bhp, 66 mpg 75 bhp 1.4 litre TDI. 1.4TDI sensibly priced at £9,995 and £8,995. Price of 1.0 base model cut to £5,995 in April 2002. Good, friendly dealers. 1.4TDI emits 119g/km CO2, so qualifies for £80pa VED from April 2002 (£85 from April 2003, £35 from April 2007).
