Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and III (1959 – 1965) Review

Rolls-Royce Silver Cloud II and III (1959 – 1965) At A Glance

4/5

+Excellent V8 really works well in this car, timeless styling improved by the quad-headlamp arrangement of the Mk3 car

-Low values don't reflect how special these cars are, restoration often economically unviable

The Silver Cloud II was the first Rolls-Royce to receive the company's new V8 engine. It might have looked like the original Silver Cloud, but with extra the muscle that new engine delivered, it was a much more effortless car to drive. Although the actual power figure was never revealed - it's around 200bhp - Rolls-Royce did say that it had risen by 25% over the six-cylinder car. The standard saloons and Park Ward limousines were now complemented by the choice of a Mulliner drophead coupé, although at a price.

In 1962, the Cloud II was facelifted to become the Cloud III, and its most recognisable feature was the quad headlamp set-up. It modernised the looks, and today is valued more as a consequence. Mechanically, some of the criticisms were answered with a high-compression version of the V8 offering a little more more and torque, while the V8 power-steering was changed to give it more feel.
