Buying Guide

Good

  • Great design, practical and fun. Looks like Kermit the frog. Sliding rear seat (like Citroen ZX) gives choice of bootspace or rear legroom. Transmission options of: five-speed manual; five-speed electric clutch 'Easy' or three-speed 'Matic'.
  • Second-generation multipoint injected 60bhp 1149cc D7F engines much better than older single-point injected 1171cc engines.
  • Electro-hydraulic PAS also became available in 1996.
  • Latest airbagged version did reasonably well in German TUV front offset crash tests.
  • All-new car was due 2003, but delayed to 2007.

Bad

  • LHD only. Never officially sold in the UK.
  • Lots about with unconverted digital speedos and right-dipping headlamps which dazzle oncoming drivers and may fail the UK MoT.
  • In June 2001 Renault was rated by Motor Warranty Direct as Britain's joint 4th worst out of 22 marques for used car warranty claims. Renault had above average warranty repair costs in 2003 Warranty Direct Reliability index (index 114.24 v/s lowest 31.93). Link:- www.reliabilityindex.co.uk

Watch

  • Second-generation multipoint injected 60 bhp 1,149cc D7F engines much better than older single-point injected 1,171cc engines.
  • But on 1,149cc D7F engines it is essential to change the timing belt, tensioners and the water pump every three years of 36,000 miles (whichever comes first).
