Bizarre would have been okay if it was remotely practical, but it isn't. 

Rear seats criticised as uncomfortable. 

5-speed autobox from Laguna V6 criticised by 'What Car?' August 2001 issue for lumpy full throttle changes, slow kickdown and slack throttle response, and no four cylinder Laguna automatics to be built until February 2002. These problems could be the reason for no automatic option on the first Avantimes. 

I can't imagine why anyone would buy one. Production stopped early 2003 and bankrupted Matra in Dieppe. Engine failures of 3.0V6 diesel not unknown. 

Scarcity and oddball 'classic' status means they make more than equivalent Vel Satis at auction.

Those record length doors drop on their hinges.

Automatic transmissions have a history of problems. ATF cooler in radiator so if it breaks coolant gets into transmission and wrecks it.
