Audi 200 (1979 – 1984) Review

The Audi 200 was a new model range created by up-speccing the 100 and bolting a turbo to its five-cylinder engine. The new model was priced to compete with the BMW 528i and Mercedes-Benz 280E, and could easily outgun what was considered the pacesetting cars in their class at the time. With 170bhp on tap and a 0-60mph time of 7.5 seconds, it combined sports car performance with lounging room for five.

And the 200 wasn’t restrained – its quad headlamps looked brutal, while the chintzy velour-clad interior took some getting used to. The warbling five-cylinder turbo was charismatic, and turbo performance was electrifying, if uncultured. But you could buy it in fuel injected form if that was all too much. The interior was close to being chintzy, too. A rare beast, but far more characterful than the car it was based on.
