A true classic. Innovative and influential.

Introduced in 1965 the R16 stood apart from its contemporaries , in concept ,in styling and technology. It was a car which was to influence popular motoring for decades to come.
As the worlds first purpose designed 5 door , not an adaptation of a saloon , but as single bodystyle which was also aerodynamically optimised ,it effectively invented a class of car which would become the predominate type and copied by most other manufacturers. This aerodynamic ,light but very strong bodyshell incorporated 14 world patents, in both design and manufacturing methods.
The FWD engine and transmission used high pressure aluminium diecasting to create a light but tough power train.Cooling system incorporated advanced thinking with a sealed circuit with expansion valve and bottle the radiator was cross flow and was fitted with an automatic electric fan.The battery was charged by an alternator with solid state electronic control , the first European car to have an alternator as standard on all versions. The powered disk drum brake system was fitted with a dynamic pressure limiting valve on the back axle to prevent lock up regardless of load. The all independent torsion bar suspension with void bushes and needle roller bearings optimised for Michelin radial tyres gave an excellent ride along with strong very safe roadholding ,but not sporting handling .Excellent interior comfort was provided by superb scientifically designed seating , the rear ones being able to fold adjust or remove according to need.Refinements included electric windows and sunroof and from 1972 electric central door locking ,another first. For some markets though not the UK air conditioning was available. I could go on , all in all a landmark design , sadly largely forgotten and ignored by the classic car movement.
