A house move, some money in the bank and social media proved to be a dangerous combination. I’d discussed the possibility of spending some of the money we’d banked - and earmarked for an extension in a few years time - following a move from Hove to the Stratford Upon Avon on a car. The idea was to buy a few things that tickled me, that initially being around the £2000-£5000 mark, though things didn’t go quite to plan.

Blame Twitter. Up popped an advert in December from Autofarm saying they had a 993 that would be an ideal Christmas present for someone. A Carrera 2 manual coupe to be precise, though my interest grew when I replied simply asking Tip? (as in Tiptronic, auto) and getting the reply it was a manual. Seemed like a good deal, it wouldn’t hurt to go and drive it then, would it…?

A few weeks later it was in my garage. I still wonder how I managed to convince my wife - the fact that the money was earning us nothing in the bank helped. There was a good bit of buyer’s remorse, not least as it sat idle for pretty much the first three months of ownership. Filthy winter roads, more specifically all the salt on them, meant trips were short, and required a lot of washing afterwards.

Fast forward to now and that’s changed. There’s barely a week where it doesn’t get a run somewhere, despite being in a position (as a motoring journalist) where I regularly have access to all sorts of other cars to drive. The 205 GTI I’ve had for 15 years sees a bit more use now too, the 993 having revived my joy of ownership, and the pleasure of driving an older car that offers feel and performance that while fast, isn’t in the easy licence-losing territory of much of the stuff I drive these days.

As I use it more there’s a list of things I want sorting. The lighter socket doesn’t work which means a flat iPhone and no sat nav on longer trips, the stereo needs some sort of Aux-in socket and it’s in need of a new screen and some touching up here and there. Thing is I’m enjoying driving it too much at the moment to do anything about them, all of them being jobs that can wait until it’s holed up for winter. An MOT and service are due soon though, which hopefully won’t wipe the smile from my face…
