5 February 1987
DAILY EXPRESS
Leyland Trucks looks certain to b e sold to a foreign competitor within the month. Negotiations are taking place with the Dutch company DAF and Paccar of Seattle in the U.S., and a final deal is expected soon. Rover group chairman Graham Day said yesterday,
" There are no other alternatives which we think make any sense , " he added. "We have to talk of a very hard - nosed commercial association, based on cash considerations ."
The truck and bus company employs 3,000 people in and around Leyland, Lancashire , making it the town's biggest single employer. It is the second time the company has been up for sale in less than a year. Last time the price was £320 million.
