Escort wins cut price car war

The fierce showrooms price war pushed new car sales in Britain to an all time high last year. The Ford Escort was most popular car of the year. Ford also remained in front overall with 26 per cent total sales, followed by Austin Rover with 17 per cent and Vauxhall with 16 per cent. The number of imported cars , including Ford and Vauxhall cars made abroad , sold In Britain rose to 58 per cent. Japanese cars accounted for about 10 per cent of the market, which saw some firms slash £1,000 off official prices.

  3. Ford Fiesta

  4. Austin Metro

  5. Ford Sierra

  6. Vauxhall Astra

  7. Austin Montego

  8. Ford Orion

  9. Vauxhall Nova

  10. Austin Maestro


New car sales in Britain totalled 1,832,408, 4-7 per cent up on 1984 and two per cent more than 1983, the previous peak.
