'The Mole' fined for assault after meeting
12 December 1980
From Our Correspondent Oxford
A difference of political opinion led to a fight between two men outside a trade union meeting, Oxford magistrates were told yesterday. Both men were bound over to keep the peace. Alan Thornett, aged 43, a BL driver known as "The Mole", of Gartlemas Road, Oxford, was fined £50 for assaulting Mr Michael Soanes, communist president on the Oxford and District Trades Council. Mr Thornett denied assault causing bodily harm.
He also pleaded not guilty to causing a breach of the peace, on which the magistrates made no decision. Mr Soanes said that at the trades council meeting on August 22 there was a disagreement over action planned to protest against cuts in the public services.
