Ex-convener in Triumph industrial peace team
1 December 1972
By Our Labour Staff
Mr Cyril Morris, former, convener of shop stewards. of the National Union of Vehicle Builders at British Leyland's Triumph car plant at Coventry and former secretary of the British Leyland combined shop stewards' committee, has been taken on by the management as an industrial relations officer at Triumph. Mr Morris, who used to be a production worker at the Triumph plant, gave up his convenership some time before he was appointed to the company.
When he was a member of the shop stewards' committee he was generally regarded as a moderate. British Leyland said yesterday that with his background Mr Morris would be a useful addition to Triumph's industrial relations team. He had already taken up his post but was not yet actively engaged in negotiations, with his former union colleagues. Mr Morris's appointment has come as a surprise and an embarrassment to other members of the joint shop stewards' committee, which is headed by left-wingers and is noted for its generally militant outlook.
