Foremen at BLMC to operate ban on overtime

19 June 1971

Leaders of 3500 foremen in British Leyland's Austin-Morris division last night rejected a pay offer and announced an overtime ban from July 1. All 16 plants in the division may also be disrupted by selective strikes from July 8 unless the offer is improved. Union delegates representing the foremen at a meeting at Eastbourne rejected a £3 a week increase from the end of this month, and an extra £1.50 next January.

The foremen, members of the Association of Scientific, Technical and Managerial Staff, claim many of the men they supervise earn more than they do. Mr Bob McClusker, an assistant general secretary, who is leading the negotiations, said he thought the guerrilla-type action would halt all production.

He added: "I have authority to take any industrial action short of a full-scale strike".

Delegates voted 15 to one to reject the offer, which would give production line foremen £41.50 a week.
