Triumph assembly men cause Coventry shutdown

All Triumph car production was at a standstill in Coventrv yesterday with 1800 men laid off because of a shortage of engines. The shutdown follows one day strikes by 300 engine assemblers in support of a bonus increase of £2 a week.Yesterdays stoppage cost Triumph 500 cars, worth over £500,000. Production of two models, the TR6 and Stag sports cars will be resumed on Monday. Most of the 1800 laid off yesterday will be back at work, but the company will lay off another 1800 on a rota system. It hopes to resume normal production on Tuesday.
A second strike at the company's Liverpool plant stopped assembly of the Toledo model yesterday, when 125 trim shop workers objected to the introduction of trainee labour. A further 66 were laid off.
