short time at Cowley

24 October 1969

News of extensive short time working at the Austin-Morris plants at Cowley, Oxford, came yesterday in a joint statement by management and shop stewards. Production of the Austin Maxi is being cut back, and there will be a 3 1/2 day week for workers on this model, with a night shift of three shifts of nine hours each.

The working week on the 1100 and 1300 lines is being reduced to 4 1/2 days. Recently workers staged a series of one day strikes in protest, against the cutback plans, which threaten to create redundancies. - Now the management has agreed to put 350 surplus workers into a reserve pool, with guaranteed wages of £20 a week, and that any reduction in the workforce will be the result of retirements and "voluntary redundancy".

Production of Land Rovers at the British Leyland plant in Birmingham was again at a standstill yesterday because of a strike by storekeepers and internal drivers over a pay claim.

AUSTIN MORRIS
On this day the last Riley of all, a 4/72 is produced.
