Pipefitters' dispute
3 June 1969
DAILY EXPRESS
Pipefitters at Pressed Steel Fisher's Oxford factory-their who-does-what dispute has led to nearly 10,000 men being idle —agreed last night to resume work today. Anticipating this decision their firm had recalled 2,500 workers to the factory. And the 250 men made idle at Morris Motors in neighbouring Cowley had also been recalled.
At two Rootes plants in Coventry 5300 men had been laid off because of the dispute, plus 1,000 at Rover's in Solihull, and 650 at M.G.'s Abingdon factory. Talks in London yesterday failed to break the deadlock over the British Leyland stoppage which has made 8,500 Lancashire car workers idle.
