Strike makes 2700 Minicar men idle

Production of the British Motor Corporation's minicars, the Austin Seven and the Morris Mini-minor. has been stopped by a strike of 550 workers at the factorv of Joseph Sankey and Sons, Bilston, Staffordshire, over a pay claim. The factory makes rear sub-frames for the cars, and deliveries have ceased More than 2,700 B.M.C. workers have been laid off-1,270 of them at the Austin works at Longbridge, Birmingham. Seven hundred men are idle at Morris Motors, Cowley; 680 at Fisher and Ludlow, Erdington; and 90 at Nuffield Metal Products, Washwood Heath. The number laid off at Fisher and Ludlow will rise to 1,030 tomorrow.
CAR WORKS STRIKES END
Draughtsmen and clerks on strike at Alvis Ltd., Coventry, and Standard- Triumph International Ltd., Fletchamstead, Warwickshire, are to return to work today so that negotiations can begin with the managements.
