Jaguar strike may end today

The strike at Jaguar Cars Ltd may well end tomorrow, I understand.

In a park beside Warwick Road about 4,500 men will meet to consider whether they should continue their stoppage over the two Nuneaton men who worked during the engineering strike on February 5. Tonight the two men, Mr Leslie Lines and Mr Frank Diskin, appeared before a disciplinary committee of the Transport and General Workers' Union in Coventry.

I understand that the result of tonight's hearing offers a hopeful basis for a return to work tomorrow. It is likely that the union's report to a joint shop stewards' committee before the strike meeting will make it plain that the two men have shown their willingness to accept any reasonable fine imposed upon them by the union. Although everything that happened tonight is shrouded in uncertainty, it seems unlikely that the union have recommended expulsion.

The firm have already announced that car orders from the United States worth more than £22,250,000 have been put in jeopardy by the strike. There are big orders from Europe which also contain stringent clauses about delivery dates.
