500 Morris Workers Laid Off Again
21 September 1960
FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
OXFORD, SEPT. 20
As supplies of car bodies again began to run short because of the continued strike of vehicle builders at the British Motor Corporation factory of Nuffield Metal Products, Birmingham, 500 Morris Minor assembly workers at Morris Motors, Oxford, who had been asked to report this morning, were laid off today until Thursday morning.
The Minor night shift-500 men-which has also been idle since the end of last week, has been told to report back on Thursday night.
More than 1,000 members of the National Union of Vehicle Builders at Nuffield Metal Products have been on strike since last Thursday over a claim for improved Payments for " waiting time "- time when production is interrupted by breakdowns or by hold-ups in component supplies. They decided yesterday to continue their strike and are due to meet again tomorrow.
