Second Stoppage In Nine Days

11 May 1960

FROM OUR CORRESPONDENT
OXFORD, MAY 10

Another unofficial stoppage-the second In nine days-at Morris Motors Ltd.. Cowley, resulted in 600 workers on the Oxford paint and production lines being sent home today. The 100 workers on the paint line stopped work in protest against the management introducing five extra men on the line.

"There will be a loss of production of 150 completed cars during the day", said a spokesman for the firm.

"The stoppage is a sequel to the one on May 2 when the company was scheduled to increase production of the Morris Oxford by one and a half vehicles an hour. To meet the new production programme it was necessary to increase the labour force on the lines, but some of the men objected as they wished to increase substantially their present earnings ", he added. The lines will reopen at 7.15 a.m. tomorrow as usual to give the men an opportunity to resume normal work.
