Quick Settlement By Arbitrator
5 May 1960
An increase of 5s. 6d. a week has been awarded to 51 men at a British Motor Corporation factory where there was a five-day unofficial strike two months ago.
The claim was by internal transport drivers at the B.M.C. tractor and transmission plant in Birmingham. The arbitrator heard evidence 12 days ago. A union official said yesterday there had been much criticism that the negotiating machinery in the industry was too slow.
"This is one of the quickest settlements on record."
More than 3,000 night shift workers stayed away from three B.M.C. factories in Birmingham yesterday, in support of their claim that night work should be concentrated into four shifts. "
