500 car workers sent home, effect of strike
16 May 1959
THE GUARDIAN
More than five hundred men at the British Motor Corporation's Austin factory at Longbridge, Birmingham, were sent home yesterday because of the unofficial strike by 60 workers at the Morris Motors tractor and transmission branch, Birmingham. The strike, about the transfer of a shop steward, started on Thursday. It has stopped the supply of front suspension units.
Yesterday production of the A35, A40, and Nash Metropolitan models was affected. A company spokesman said that if the stoppage continued after Whitsuntide considerably more men would have to be laid off.
