Which classic grey import is the cheapest to insure?

Thanks to a some short-sightedness on the parts of car manufacturers, grey imports were big business in the 1990s and early 2000s. I mean, who wouldn't want a normally-aspirated version of the Nissan 300ZX? Or two-seater Honda soft-top that could only acommodate those under 5ft? And then there's the Nissan Figaro... Yep, from the weird to the wonderful, independent specialists around the UK brought used cars over from Japan and sold them to eager British buyers.

Can I get it on a classic policy?

All of the cars featured here are available on a classic policy, but it's always worth checking with your insurer.

What are the benefits?

As well as being with a specialist insurer, a classic policy will often offer benefits such as limited mileage discounts, free European cover, agreed valuation and club member discounts

How much are they worth?

Most people worry that owning a classic grey import is going to be expensive when it comes to insurance, but there's really very little to worry about. For example, the insurance cost for an important Mazda Eunos Roadster is almost no different to the MX-5 that was officially sold in the UK.

What to look for when buying one?

Each model has its own weak spots and quirks, but make sure the car has been well looked after, check for accident damage, rust, and that the engine is in good health.

How can I lower the cost of my insurance

Insurers often offer discounts if you’re a member of a classic car club. You could also get yourself a discount by keeping the miles down. If you've recently passed your test, consider taking a PassPlus, IAM or other driver qualification - some insurers will chip a bit off your premium if you do. Keeping your car garaged is also another good idea.

What about modifications?

Always tell your insurer about any modifications to the vehicle - some modifcations such as security systems or tracking devices can reduce your premium. But if your insurer knows your car is modified, you'll most likely get like-for-like cover so you won't be out of pocket if you need to make a claim.
