Top 10: Cars from the BMC and Leyland day
An impressive and rather fitting turnout of 30 Rover 800s converged on the British Motor Museum at Gaydon to celebrate the model’s 30th anniversary. But it was just part of a day packed with BMC, BL and Austin-Rover eye candy. If you’re not a fan of the British car industry’s darkest hours, then look away now. And finally – we couldn’t list our top 10 cars without mention of the model that upstaged all the others at Gaydon. What was once a big date in the Mini calendar seems to have been taken over somewhat by the models from the Austin-Rover era, and the 800-Series was more prevalent than any other BL-ARG model; a real indicator that the big Rover’s time has finally come. Our favourite, from a fine line-up, was Alex Sebbinger’s 825 Sterling, chassis number 672, which was registered just four days after the 800 went on sale in 1986. Apart from the British Motor Museum’s own 800 – number one off the line – it’s the oldest known survivor.
